Jane (Janie) Riley, LMFT (she/her)

Bio and Credentials

For over 25 years, I have accompanied people through some of the most challenging and meaningful passages of their lives. My work is grounded in psychoanalytic thinking and shaped by a deep commitment to genuine connection. I bring both rigor and warmth to the therapeutic relationship. Most importantly, I have been devoted to my own personal growth throughout my career, something that both informs and enlivens me daily.

I completed my psychoanalytic training at the Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California (PINC), where I am also a faculty member. I periodically supervise and teach clinicians across the Bay Area. I hold a Master's degree from the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS), and my practice reflects that integrative foundation. I draw on analytic thought, somatic approaches, family systems, and non-Western and Buddhist perspectives to offer a depth of context for our work together.

My clinical background is broad. I have worked in community and school settings, directed a clinical program for WORLD in Oakland, and maintained a private practice in which I work with people navigating depression, anxiety, relational difficulties, life transitions, trauma, and questions of meaning and identity. I also find great joy in working with couples and family systems of all kinds, including married and unmarried partners, blended families, chosen families, and people sharing their lives in ways that don't fit conventional categories. Whatever the structure, my focus is on the quality of connection: how people communicate, rupture and repair, and find their way toward optimal connection and generativity.

I also work with professionals as a consultant and coach. This work is informed not only by clinical training but by my own experience as a leader and program director. I understand firsthand the particular pressures of organizational life, the complexity of professional relationships, and the ways that workplace dynamics can mirror and amplify our deeper patterns. I bring both psychological depth and practical fluency to these conversations.

I am interactive, engaged and culturally sensitive in my approach. I am neither distant nor directive, but genuinely present. I think carefully, I listen deeply and openly, and I am not afraid to follow a conversation wherever it needs to go. My training is analytic, but my sensibility is flexible and curious, informed by years of group and private study with highly advanced clinicians and Buddhist teachers.

In addition to my core clinical practice, I offer specialized work in expanded modalities — I am happy to speak with you about whether this might be relevant to your needs.
